Netflix Charging More for Blu-ray

Looks like Netflix customers who wish to receive Blu-ray movies will have to pay a bit more each month. Don’t worry, it isn’t much and I’m willing to bet that if you’ve been a customer for very long, you’ll gladly pay the extra amount.

According to the message I saw when I was browsing my account settings, customers will have to pay and extra $1 per month to have access to Blu-ray movies. I’m not sure if the price varies by the different accounts (2 at a time, 3 at a time, ect.).

As you can see, Netflix will pro-rate the current month (they’ve always been really good about that). The next full month will have the extra $1 added to it. I also thought it was interesting that they are checking to make sure you have the necessary equipment. I know that none of you Geek Inspired readers would make this mistake, but I guarantee Netflix has had a fair amount of trouble when Blu-ray came onto the scene. You know there are been people who thought they’d get some Blu-ray movies (because they’re awesome) without giving any thought to what it takes to enjoy Blu-ray.

Ok, just in case you need a reminder, you’re going to need the following to enjoy Blu-ray movies:

• A high definition television (preferably one with a 1080p display)
• A Blu-ray player
• The appropriate cables to connect the Blu-ray player to your TV (or receiver, if you have a home theater setup). Usually, a good HDMI cable will do the trick.
• A Blu-ray movie

There. I’m glad we’ve cleared that up. :)

All in all, I’m glad to see Netflix do well and keep up with current technology. I really don’t see a problem with paying a little more for something better and, honestly, I’m a bit surprised it hasn’t been this way all along. One might argue the price point; $1 isn’t very much to you and I. Just remember to multiply that $1 by every customer every month. I bet that $1 adds up to a considerable amount on Netflix’s side.
