Recover Deleted Items in Outlook

Posted on June 4, 2008

With all the spam and junk mail out there, it’s easy to accidentally delete important email. If you’re using Outlook 2000 or later in an Exchange Server environment (ask your administrator if you don’t know), it’s easy enough to get it back.

To get recover deleted items in outlook:

  1. Highlight the Deleted Items folder in the Folder list.
  2. In the Tools menu, click “Recover Deleted Items.”
  3. Highlight the items you want to recover. To highlight multiple items, hold down the CTRL button while you highlight the additional items.
  4. Click the “Recover Selected Items” button.

The items you recovered will appear in your Deleted Items folder. From there, you can move the item(s) to another folder.

Recovering emails from a hard delete.

If you hold the Shift key down while you press the delete key, you are performing a hard delete. A hard delete bypasses the Deleted Items folder and permanently deletes the item. This is a handy way to get rid of mail that you are 100% sure you don’t need.

Recovering emails from a hard delete requires editing the registry which is something you should be very careful with. For complete instructions, refer to this article on Microsoft’s support website.
