Thanks. I'll share these ideas with him. I know nothing about Vista and have no desire to learn. I am very happy with my Linux machine and running XP on my virtual machine only when necessary.

Haha... yeah, I know a few people who bought a laptop with Vista and end up hating it. I don't know if it's because of the differences between Vista and XP, or if the laptop hardware isn't stout enough to run Vista well.

3GB is a good amount of RAM. In fact, some versions of Vista will recognize no more than 3GB. Since this is a brand new laptop, I'd uninstall some of the crap Dell puts onto the laptop before they ship it out. Just cleaning up after the manufacturer can help quite a bit.

You can also try adjusting some of the system settings to make Vista perform more smoothly. For example, try disabling both the Transparency option and the animations for opening/closing windows. In the Power Options menu, selecting High Performance may help too (though, it may effect how quickly your battery's charge is depleted).

I hope some of this helps! Good Luck!

Just over the weekend, a friend's husband asked me if I had ever installed RAM on a laptop. I said no and asked why he was interested in this since he had just gotten a new Dell laptop in the mail the day before. He said it was slow. I proceeded to ask him how much RAM the computer has and his response was "oh, I think about 256MB". I questioned this response and proceeded to look into it myself. I found that his new laptop had 3G of RAM and told him that if he wanted a faster computer to uninstall Vista.
